How it works

The Torque Wind Turbine has wing arms with blades, which are in an open position when they move in, or in about, the same direction as the wind. These blades are always put in a closed position towards the wind direction, when the wind turbine is in the operational working mode. The wing arm moving towards the direction of the wind with closed blades will create only a very low resistance. This improves the performance of the wind turbine dramatically.

When the wind arms are quite straight forward in the same direction of the wind, so the wing arm is perpendicular to the direction of the wind, the wing arm blades in the open position de-accelerates the wind, the so called drag force.

When the wing arm blades are in an open position moving in about the same direction as the wind, so perpendicular and under many different angles, the wind flows into and over the blades where its direction is changed as it follows the shape of the wing arm. There are three resulting forces: the drag caused by the wind moving over the blades, the lateral force exerted on the blades while the wing arm blades changes the direction of the wind, and the final direction and velocity of the air after being redirected, creating a lift force and drafting effect. Now the drag between the air and wing arm blades is usually low and is usually not considered. The two important forces are the final rotation speed and the change between the initial and final wind velocities. The combined forces are pushing the wind turbine more than only the drag force. These forces will increase, as the velocity of the wind increases, and can become greater than the speed of the wind. The drag will start the wind turbine and the lift forces will increase the rotation speed of the wind turbine.

When a wing arm blade has an equal speed as the wind speed, this particular blade cannot accelerate the wind turbine any further. An intelligent mechanism prevents the negative resistance effect, when a blade in an open position would go faster than the wind, to improve the performance of the wind turbine.
